IntroductionScaffolding Literacy is a literacy program developed at the Schools and Community Centre, University of Canberra by Director Brian Gray with Wendy Cowey and tutors at the Centre. As part of a research grant from DETYA to Brian Gray, Scaffolding Literacy was translated to the classroom at Latham Primary School by Robina Jeffs and Dianne Peterson, with Margaret Graetz and Chris Sloan. This website describes Scaffolding Literacy as it is currently practised in Robina's and Dianne's classrooms. Scaffolding Literacy addresses the dynamic relationship between literacy teaching, students' self-esteem, and behaviour management. It applies to all Key Learning Areas and all grades. The Scaffolding Literacy model of the reading process recognises the constant interaction between the meaning of the text and the use of graphophonic and orthographic information. For teaching writing, Scaffolding Literacy recognises the difference between oral and written language, so children are explicitly shown the language choices that good writers make in their writing. In Scaffolding Literacy, the teacher expects results from all children that are at or beyond expected grade level results. Scaffolding Literacy recognises that different children need differing levels of support to achieve this.
